All Smalley wave springs are designed to be compressed to a specific working height. Any given spring can be compressed to its working height without damage. If the spring is compressed below that working height, it is possible that its structure might yield and take a permanent set.
When deformed like this, springs will exhibit losses in both free height and spring load. If you are concerned about the load of a spring or compressing a spring to solid, contact your Smalley engineer today. Our engineers can design a spring to meet your target application performance.
Smalley can manufacture springs in diameters of up to about 120 in. (3 m). Such large wave springs can be impractical except when very specific design requirements need to be met. Contact a Smalley engineer to discuss your design needs to learn if a wide diameter spring is right for you.
